Located in the northeast region of Missouri, Monroe County has a population of 8,666 according to the most recent census conducted in 2020. The county seat of Monroe County is Paris. This county is known as the birthplace of the famous American writer Mark Twain, who spent his early childhood in the area.
Monroe County was established on January 6, 1831, and was named after James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States. During the early settlement of the region, many migrants from the Upper South, especially Kentucky and Tennessee, made their way to Monroe County. They brought with them their traditions of slaveholding and agriculture, cultivating crops such as tobacco and hemp that were similar to those grown in Middle Tennessee and Kentucky. The settlers also brought with them the distinctive antebellum architecture and culture of their home states. The county became known as the heart of "Little Dixie" due to its strong Southern influence.
Today, Monroe County is a rural area with a rich history and cultural heritage. Visitors can explore sites related to Mark Twain's early life, as well as other historic landmarks and museums. The county also offers outdoor recreational opportunities, including hunting, fishing, and camping.

The Wedge, otherwise known as the Farmers and Merchants Bank Building, is a historic bank located in Monroe City, Monroe County, Missouri. Constructed in 1917, this unique building is shaped like a wedge and is covered in tapestry brick. One of the building's most impressive features is its canted entrance, which is covered in glazed terra cotta tile and has a granite base.
The Wedge has been recognized for its architectural and historical significance and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. Visitors to the area can appreciate the building's unique design and learn about its role in the history of the community. The Wedge is a notable example of early 20th-century commercial architecture and a valuable addition to the cultural heritage of Monroe County.
